It’s officially time to talk about some fall transition pieces!
The weather is starting to change, the fall clothes are coming out, and some of my favorite stores have been rolling out all of their new fall pieces. This is probably one of my favorite times of year to get dressed because you can finally start pulling out the layers again without needing the full winter wardrobe just yet.
So I wanted to round up some of my favorite transitional fall staples that are perfect for these in-between weeks and will carry you right into the colder months too.
These are all pieces I wore ALL the time last fall and already know I’ll be wearing again this year.
Aritzia Fleece Vests + Quarter Zips
Starting with something I wore the heck out of last year: Aritzia fleeces.
I have both the quarter zips and vests in several different colors, but I especially love the vests for transitional weather. They’re cozy and comfortable without being too warm, and they’re SO easy to layer.
Throw one over a basic tee or long sleeve while it’s warmer, then add more layers underneath as it gets colder.
Aritzia also has tons of color options and always seems to come out with some fun new ones each year. They’re definitely an investment piece, but considering how much I wore mine last fall, they were completely worth it for me.

The Perfect Oversized Denim Jacket
A good oversized denim jacket is honestly a year-round essential, but especially for fall.
I have tried SO many denim jackets over the years because finding the right oversized fit is harder than it should be. I want something roomy enough that I can comfortably layer underneath it without it being so oversized that I feel like I’m drowning in denim.
I found my favorite last year, and if you told me I could only keep three things from my entire closet, this would probably be one of them.
There are just so many ways to style a denim jacket during fall, and it’s one of those pieces you can throw over basically anything.
Aritzia Effortless Pants
I have talked about these approximately a million times, but the Aritzia Effortless Pants are absolutely a staple in my wardrobe.
I have several pairs in different colors and fabrics. My most-worn pair is the crepe fabric in Light Birch, but I also LOVE the satin finish when I want something that feels a little dressier.
They’re easy to style with a basic top for everyday wear or dress up with a sweater, blouse, or jacket.
I also have a very similar pair from Amazon at a lower price point if you want the same kind of look without investing in the Aritzia pair.

Ruffled Shorts + An Oversized Sweater
If you live somewhere that stays warmer a little longer like I do, I HIGHLY recommend having a cute pair of ruffled shorts in your fall wardrobe.
One of my go-to outfits last year that I probably wore at least once a week was a pair of ruffled shorts with an oversized sweater and either boots or flats.
My ruffled shorts are from Abercrombie, and I love them because you still get that fall outfit feeling without having to fully commit to jeans and pants when the weather isn’t quite there yet.
Once it actually starts cooling down, you can easily swap the shorts for jeans or trousers and keep the rest of the outfit exactly the same.

An Oversized Denim Shirt
Another Aritzia find I wore constantly last year was an oversized denim shirt.
I actually loved mine so much that I ended up ordering the exact same shirt in a lighter wash.
Similar to an oversized denim jacket, this is just one of those pieces you can do SO much with. Wear it open over a tank, button it up, layer it with shorts while it’s warmer, or pair it with pants and boots once the temperatures drop.

The Amazon Oversized Sweater I Wear With Everything
This might genuinely be my favorite sweater of all time.
It’s from Amazon, it’s perfectly oversized, and I wore the heck out of it last year. I have a size large for that extra oversized fit.
I can wear it with shorts, a skirt, jeans, trousers… pretty much anything. It’s one of those basics that makes putting an outfit together really easy, which is probably why I reach for it so much.

A Dressier Off-the-Shoulder Sweater
Last but not least, I love having a slightly dressier sweater option in my fall wardrobe.
This one is another Aritzia find that I loved enough to buy in two colors, including black. It has a wider neckline, so you can wear it normally or pull it slightly off one shoulder.
I usually keep it simple with jeans and boots, but it’s another piece that can easily be dressed up or down depending on where you’re going.
Fall Staples I’ll Actually Wear
I definitely have more fall staples in my closet, but when I looked back at pictures from last year, these were the pieces I saw myself wearing over and over again.
That’s always my biggest thing when shopping for a new season. I’d rather find a few really good staples that I can style ten different ways than buy a bunch of pieces that only work with one outfit.
Give me a good denim jacket, an oversized sweater, a pair of trousers, and some easy layering pieces and I’m GOOD.
Now that the weather is finally starting to change, I’m very ready to get all of these back into the rotation.
